Coordinate Systems
  • Geographic Coordinate System: Not projected, still in angles and degrees.
  • Projected Coordinate System: Projected in linear units (meters, miles, feet, etc.)

    Class Plan (09/06)

    Class Plan:
    • Distribute ArcGIS CDs (installation assistance)

    • Where to Locate GIS Data??

    • Exercise: Create a map showing the median household income and median contract rent per blockgroup in Dallas County, TX.

      • Introduce TIGER Files (about)
        • Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing system

      • Data from American Factfinder Website

      • Clean Tables for ArcGIS
        • Top row reserved for field names. Data must begin on second row
        • No characters permitted in the top row (field name row) except for letters, numbers, and underscores.
        • Field names may not begin with a number.
        • Files must be saved as either:
          • Comma-Delimited files (*.csv)
          • Tab-Delimited files (*.txt)
          • dBase (*.dbf)
          • ArcGIS 9.2 can read Microsoft Excel 2000/2003 (*.xls) files

      • To join together in ArcMap
        • Add the shapefile and table to ArcMap
        • Right-click the shapefile (in the layer list) and select Joins/Relates and click Join
        • Specify the two fields that will join together (one to one relationship) and click OK

      • Export shapefile to make join permanent
        • Right-click shapefile, select Data, and click Export Data.

    • (Time Permitting) Add all of the Indian Restaurants in Dallas County to the above map.
      • Use Reference USA
      • Catch: Reference USA permits 50 records per download. So if you need 104 records, you need to download three batches of records and copy/paste them together.

    Friday, August 29, 2008

    Welcome to the Class

Please note the links to the right of this page -->

This course is Advanced Real Estate Market Analysis, with a strong focus on data sources, data collection, and geographic information systems (GIS). Consider this course a combination of market analysis and an Introduction to GIS.

This is a practical course. After this course, you will be able to actually use GIS. You will be able to acquire your own data sets, create your own maps, and run your own analysis.

    Easy.

Hold onto your hats folks, because this will be one heck of a 14-week ride!! No doubt it will be a lot of work, but market analysis and GIS is just so dang fun that I promise it will be worth it.

This blog will be used as a class discussion forum during these 16 weeks. Posting instructions on syllabus. Please do not hesitate to post your most brilliant ideas (at least marginally course related) and even your most frustrating problems. Yes, there will be frustrations. Perhaps many. It is inevitable. Also feel free to comment on my postings and others' postings as well. We have a lot to learn in only 16 weeks so this extra communication forum between classes might be useful.

This blog should be checked regularly for any important information, such as changes to my office hours, assignment changes, or class cancellations (but don't hold your breath waiting for that one...).

    ArcGIS @ Home

Each student will receive a 12 month educational license for ArcGIS 9.2. This software includes single-use code. This means you cannot install the software on more than 1 computer.

When registering the software onb your own computers, you are prompted to specify which extensions you would like to trial. You need to select at least 'Spatial Analyst', '3D Analyst', and 'Geostatistical Analyst'. It does you no harm, however, to simply select all of them.

    From ESRI:

Please advise each student to review the site listed below before installing the software:

    [ LINK ]

Please also advise the students that as they register the software, they should make sure to write out the full school name in the organization field rather than using any acronyms, the word "Student", or the word "Self". When those words or initials are used, there is a delay in the registration time as it is required that ESRI manually review the registration rather than having the process be completed automatically.

It is advisable that you install ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack 6. You want the ArcGIS Desktop (ArcInfo, ArcEditor, ArcView) version.

    ESRI Virtual Courses

Each student will be given access codes for various ESRI Virtual Courses.

    INSTRUCTIONS:
    -----------------------------------------------
    1. Go To My Training
Go to http://training.esri.com. Click "My Training." Under My Courses click "My Virtual Campus Courses." If you already have an ESRI Global Account, log in using your username and password. If you do not, click "Create New Account."

    2. Start Your New Course
Click "Start a new course". Type your 14-character Course Access Code in the field provided and click "Go." Follow the instructions on your screen.

    3. Go To Class
From your course list, click the course title to begin.
    -----------------------------------------------

When assigned ESRI Virtual Course modules, bring in hard copies of the certificate to me. Here is an example of a certificate:

After successfully completing the exam, click the certificate button (looks like a little graduation cap) and then click on 'Completed'.

    Homework (due 09/06)

    1. What is the % Hispanic population of the Census Block Group in Dallas County with the highest % of renters?
      1. Hints: Census 2000 data can be found at American Factfinder. First, identify the block group that has the highest % renters and then the % Hispanic pop in that block group is the answer.
    2. Read What is ArcGIS? pages 1 - 63 (chapters 1-4).
      1. Download while on campus
      2. Write a paragraph (a few sentences) explaining how you think GIS can be used for market research.

Create a Word file containing these assignments and bring in a hard-copy.

What?? You say there are possibly numerous block groups with 100% renters? If this turns out to be the case, search through the block groups with 100% renters to locate the Block Group with the highest number of Hispanics. Your answer will then be the % Hispanic in this block group.

    Team Chapter Presentations

There will be 6 teams. In addition to various team projects and presentations (see syllabus), each team will make a chapter presentation to the class. The first team will cover chapters 1 and 2. The second team will cover chapter 3. The third team chapter 4 and so on through chapter 7.

Teams 2 through 6 will discuss/outline the chapter and one case study. Team 1 will not have a case study, and so will cover 2 chapters.

Before the second class, I will post the schedule and chapters for each team.

    Plan for First Class

Here's what I want for us to do:

    1. Discuss syllabus
    2. Explore DFW Pizzeria Demo Data
    3. Explore real estate consulting firms
      1. Form teams and email group names and firm
        1. Each student email: (1) Team Name, (2) Firm Name, (3) Firm FID
        2. No firms from Dallas or Tarrant counties
    4. Explore American FactFinder
      1. Which block group in Tarrant County has the highest median household income?
      2. What is the % African American population within this block group?
    5. Discuss homework
